What is Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)?

The PMSBY Scheme is a government-backed accident insurance policy aimed at providing financial security to the common man. For a nominal cost of just ₹20 per year (less than the cost of a tea per month), it offers insurance coverage of ₹2 Lakhs.

This scheme is linked directly to your savings bank account, ensuring hassle-free auto-renewal every year.

Eligibility Criteria for 2026

To enroll in the PMSBY 2026 plan, you must fulfil these simple conditions:

  • Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen or NRI with an Indian bank account.
  • Age Limit: Minimum 18 years and Maximum 70 years.
  • Bank Account: Must have an active Savings Account with Aadhaar linked.
  • Consent: You must sign the auto-debit consent form.

🚀 How to Apply for PMSBY Online?

You do not need to visit any government office. You can register directly through your bank.

Method 1: Net Banking (Online)

  1. Log in to your SBI / HDFC / ICICI / PNB Net Banking portal.
  2. Go to the “Social Security Schemes” or “Insurance” section.
  3. Select “Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana”.
  4. Select the account number for premium deduction.
  5. Click submit. You will receive an acknowledgment SMS and the policy certificate immediately.

Method 2: SMS Activation

Many banks allow activation via SMS. For example, SBI customers can often reply to the bank’s promotional SMS with “PMSBY Y”.

How to Download PMSBY Certificate?

If you have already enrolled, you can download your policy bond online:

  • Step 1: Visit the National Insurance Portal or your specific bank’s website.
  • Step 2: Look for “PMSBY Policy Status” or “Certificate Download”.
  • Step 3: Enter your Bank Account Number and Date of Birth.
  • Step 4: Click “Generate”. Your certificate will download as a PDF.

⚠️ How to Claim (Nominee Guide)

In the unfortunate event of an accident, the nominee must follow these steps to claim the ₹2 Lakhs:

  1. Inform the Bank: Approach the bank branch where the deceased held the account within 30 days.
  2. Submit Documents:
    • Completed Claim Form.
    • Death Certificate (Original).
    • FIR / Panchnama / Post Mortem Report (Essential for accident proof).
    • KYC of the Nominee.
  3. Disbursement: Upon verification, the insurance company will transfer the money directly to the nominee’s bank account.
